Debora Sloan: My exploration of painting began in a Grade 12 Art class. Upon being assigned an art project in the style of Abstract Expressionism, I discovered a passion in experimenting with paint - particularly colour and texture. I continued my education at Queen’s University in Sociology and Art History and went on to do a post-graduate diploma in Arts Administration and Cultural Management.
Working in various public and commercial Toronto art galleries and doing private art consulting I have continued to pursue my interest in painting. Though mostly self-taught, over the past seven years I have been placing my work and doing commissions for different private and corporate collections in Toronto and have shown my work in small art shows and public spaces.
Over these years my style has changed from completely abstract to experimenting with more figurative forms. Though I continue to explore different styles, my most recent series returns to the pure abstract using bolder colours and more structured compositions. What remains consistent in my work is an interest in the elements and principles of design – especially colour and texture. While experimenting with composition and various mediums to develop my own stylistic character, my interest is not in emphasizing the realism or naturalism of forms but to stylize them using paint and medium in vigorous ways.
My paintings reflect aspects of my personality and my style reveals my intensity and my spontaneity. My reasons for painting are not necessarily to express any specific concept or personal emotion, nor are they to intentionally elicit a given emotional response from the viewer. Instead, I paint because of a natural satisfaction and fascination with the hands-on creative process. My hope is that within the abstraction the viewer is inspired by their own creativity, imagining and evoking those images and emotions that they themselves see and feel within each piece.
My art is influenced by my personality, by my experiences and by spaces. Part of my objective as an artist is to create beautiful, interesting objects – works that are accessible and aesthetically pleasing; works that bring life, drama and balance to an empty space. Principally I achieve this through the use of colour, texture, movement and composition – hopefully engaging the viewer with these elements as they engage me.
